Town of Ridgeland and Arrhythmia Alliance Launch Lifesaving Partnership

Town of Ridgeland and Arrhythmia Alliance Launch Lifesaving Partnership
Arrhythmia Alliance Defibs Save Lives #RidgelandHeartsMatter

Ridgeland, SC (January 15, 2019) – Leaders from the Town of Ridgeland and Hilton Head-based non-profit Arrhythmia Alliance met last week to launch a partnership focused on saving lives in the community through the placement of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) throughout the town of Ridgeland. Arrhythmia Alliance and the town announced the launch of the Defibs Save Lives #RidgelandHeartsMatter campaign with an initial goal of equipping 10 Ridgeland police and fire department vehicles to make the Ridgeland community heart safe. Additionally, there are plans in place to install public-access AEDs in locations throughout the town, such as Main Street, Town Hall, and Turpin Park.

In the United States, an estimated 360,000 people experience out-of-hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) every year and nine out of ten of those people will die as a result. CPR alone only provides a 9% chance of survival however with CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator combined, chances of survival increase more than five-fold to over 50%. The goal of this partnership is to improve the chances of survival for the town’s residents and visitors who may experience SCA.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest affects people of all ages, young and old and strikes without warning. The strongest chance of survival is with the use of an AED to shock the heart back into a normal rhythm. Anyone can use an AED, even a child. You cannot cause any further harm to a person by using one – all you can do is SAVE A LIFE.
