Defibs Save Lives Campaign

In the United States, about 360,000 people experience out-of-hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and nine out of ten people will die as a result. CPR alone only provides a 9% chance of survival however with CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator chances of survival increase more than five-fold to over 50%.

The Defibs Save Lives Campaign is a direct result of these devastating statistics. The campaign is an education based advocacy and fundraising movement that serves the local areas of the Lowcountry in South Carolina, but also meets the needs of communities across the United States. This critical work equips communities with the education, tools and resources necessary to implement the chain of survival during SCA in the public and private sectors.

This goal is accomplished with a three-pronged approach:

  • Education: Providing class room instruction about SCA, the chain of survival and CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) instruction and function.
  • Tools: Placement of Automated External Defibrillators in the public and private sectors of communities.
  • Resources:  Developing and distributing informational materials to educate, inform and support communities, diagnosed patients and the undiagnosed person.
